Or, what about the concept of “Shamon,” the iconic phrase from his hit 1987 song “Bad,” which was famously mispronounced, turning into a signature catchphrase.
Then there’s the singular, the white glove adorned with crystals that MiJackson chose to wear in many of his performances.
Perhaps this is the ultimate accessory that people adore the most. A swift, undeniable marker, Jackson allegedly wore the glove for the first time in 1983 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Motown. He later confessed in an interview, “I thought the one glove was cool… it seemed very ordinary to wear two gloves.”
However, when we’re ready to embrace the superstar narrative, actress Cicely Tyson once shared that there might have been a genuine reason behind MJ wearing his famous glove.
According to Tyson, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 96, a fashion designer who worked with Jackson in the 1980s revealed that the singer wore a single glove to hide his vitiligo.
“Suddenly, [the designer] said, ‘I’m doing this for Michael,'” Tyson recalled in a 2019 interview with CNN.The glove was created with the intention of concealing the vitiligo.
Not only that, Tyson also said that the glove was specifically designed to conceal the signs of Jackson’s skin condition.
The late actor stated, “The glove was to hide it.” “That’s how the glove came into being.”
Vitiligo is a chronic condition that causes light patches to appear on the skin due to a loss of melanin.
Discrediting the rumors of skin bleaching, Jackson once emotionally shared in an interview with Oprah, “I am a black American. I am proud of my race. I am proud of who I am. I have a lot of pride and dignity… This is a skin disorder that destroys the pigmentation of the skin. It’s something I cannot help, okay? But when people make up stories that I don’t want to be who I am, it hurts me… This is a problem for me, which I cannot control.”
