Indian middle-order batsman Suryakumar Yadav showcased his prowess in the third T20 match against West Indies, playing a vital inning to keep India alive in the series. The right-handed batsman scored 83 runs off 44 balls, helping India chase down the target of 169 runs on August 8th in Guyana.

Suryakumar’s T20I form has differed significantly from his performances in ODIs on the international stage. As India prepares for the Asia Cup and the World Cup, his form in ODIs has been lacking. In the early stages of 2023, prior to the Indian Premier League, Yadav struggled to make an impact against Australia in the home series, getting out for three consecutive ducks.

When asked about his role in the Indian ODI team, Suryakumar admitted that his ODI stats haven’t been impressive. He said, “If I’m honest with myself, I know my ODI numbers are quite poor. I don’t feel ashamed to admit it because it’s more important to figure out how to improve it. I therefore need more practice, Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid informed me. I don’t frequently play this type.

An honest Yadav revealed the expectations of the captain and coach before the ODI World Cup 2023. He mentioned, “They asked me to spend some time at the crease and think about how I could be valuable to the team in the last 10-15 overs. They want me to play around 45-50 balls in a match, and if I’m batting in the final 15 overs – 18th over onwards – they’ve given me the freedom to decide how to approach it.”

India managed to come from behind and is now trailing West Indies 2-1 in the 5-match T20 series. Suryakumar and Tilak Varma combined for an 87-run partnership off 51 balls.

Suryakumar Yadav set a record for hitting the fastest 100 sixes in T20 Internationals for India. Playing in his 51st T20I match, Yadav achieved this milestone. While he missed out on his fourth T20I century, he still managed to break the records of senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in terms of hitting sixes.

In the overall list, Suryakumar becomes the third Indian batsman to hit 100 sixes in T20Is, following Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Rohit Sharma still holds the record for the most sixes by an Indian in T20Is with 82 sixes. Virat Kohli has hit 117 sixes so far. Suryakumar Yadav now has 101 T20I sixes to his name.
