Since Barbie has made a whopping $575 million at the domestic box office today, it has become the highest-grossing film of 2023. Warner Brothers and IMAX have announced that the film directed by Greta Gerwig will be receiving a one-week IMAX release in select North American and international locations starting from September 22nd. All around the world!
Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, this picture has raked in a staggering $1.3 billion at the global box office. Along with experiencing the film for the first time in IMAX, audiences will also get to enjoy specially curated post-credit footage selected by Gerwig. You might recall that Openheimer dominated all IMAX theaters in its opening week as Christopher Nolan’s epic was shot with IMAX cameras.
Gerwig expressed, “The excitement for Barbie has been incredible worldwide, proving to be inspiring, humble, and profound. So many Barbie fans have joined us on this journey, and we can’t thank them enough for sharing their Barbie experience across theaters, social media, and the world. We’ve made this for the big screen, so bringing it to the largest IMAX screen is truly thrilling. As a special thank you to Barbie enthusiasts, we’re excited to enhance the experience by adding extra footage to share more of the incredible work of our cast and crew.”
CEO of IMAX Corporation, Richard Gelfond, remarked, “Witnessing a seminal film like this gain such critical and commercial success in this climate has been truly exhilarating for all of us in the exhibition community. To distribute this special version of Barbie, with footage never before seen in IMAX, to IMAX audiences worldwide, is a thrilling partnership with Greta and her filmmaking team, as well as our friends at Warner Brothers.”
Warner Brothers’ Domestic Distribution Head, Jeff Goldstein, and International Distribution Head, Andrew Cripps, shared, “If there was one missing piece in winning strategy, it was having the prowess of Greta’s visionary eye to position it on the premium IMAX screen in the competitive summer landscape. Even in its sixth week of release, Barbie continues to draw audiences from all corners of the globe, highlighting viewers’ excitement for the film’s quality and story. Greta, Margot, Ryan, and everyone involved have not only captured attention but also enticed filmgoers everywhere, and we are thrilled to offer them the chance to see Barbie, whether for the first or fifth time, in this immersive IMAX format.”
